If you mention birds, fashion and millinery today, apparitions of the late Isabella Blow and Lee McQueen are likely to pop up and show you first hand how to work them to chic effect. But there was another fan of mode d'oiseau back in the 40s. Life.com recently ran a feature called "Turkey Feather Gown? A Plucky Bride" which features wedding day creations by designer Barbara O. Ehrhart. In 1947 she made her own wedding dress (which was made of 500 yards of plumes from a truckload of White Holland turkeys), bridesmaids gowns and accessories from turkey feathers. One gown was then valued at $18,000 - yeah, that's nearly $175,000 in todays dollars!
